Rebellion 2 Samuel 23:5-7
2 Samuel 23:5-7 is part of David's last words, where he reflects on God’s covenant with him and contrasts the blessings of the righteous with the fate of the wicked.
"Is not my house right with God? Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part? Will he not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire? But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns, which are not gathered with the hand. Whoever touches thorns uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear; they are burned up where they lie."
This passage presents rebellion as a key element in the life of the wicked, often characterized by opposition to God's covenant and His ways.
David begins by acknowledging the security and perfection of God's covenant.
Why Rebellion Matters Today
Cultural Rebellion Against God’s Covenant
Today, society often rejects God’s standards, choosing self-reliance over submission. Like thorns, this rebellion harms and spreads confusion.
Personal Rebellion
Rebellion begins in the heart—a refusal to trust or follow God's leading. It can manifest in pride, disobedience, or bitterness.
How to Respond to Rebellion
Submit to God's Covenant
Recognize the security and blessing found in aligning with God’s promises.
This passage reminds us that God's covenant stands firm and secure, offering salvation and fulfillment. Rebellion, in contrast, leads to harm and destruction. The call is clear: align with God’s everlasting covenant and resist the lure of rebellion.
