We've Come Full Circle

Jola Ajelabi

2 Samuel 21:15-17 tells the story of a time when David, now older, goes to battle against the Philistines once again. During the fight, David grows weary, and Ishbi-benob, a Philistine warrior, sees the opportunity to kill him. But Abishai, one of David’s loyal men, comes to his aid and defeats the Philistine, saving David’s life. After this, David’s men swear that he should no longer go into battle, to protect the "lamp of Israel."

David had fought the Philistines throughout his life, starting with Goliath. Now, even as a king in his later years, the same enemy resurfaces. This shows that life often brings us back to familiar challenges, but in different stages. "We've come full circle" reminds us that battles we thought were behind us may return, yet each time we face them, it’s with a different perspective and new strength.

David’s men recognize that his life is precious to the whole nation, calling him the “lamp of Israel.” The full circle here represents a moment of reflection—David’s journey from being a young shepherd to a warrior king who now must be protected by those he once led. It’s a cycle of giving and receiving, leadership and support.

In conclusion, coming full circle in life involves recognizing that challenges may return, but we are not alone in facing them. With God’s grace, we grow, transition, and empower others to continue the journey. Like David, we must learn when to step back and let others rise to the occasion, knowing that the battles are no longer fought just for ourselves, but for the greater good.
